What to do after an incident
All incidents, including near-misses and violence or the threat of it, and work-related ill health must be reported to your supervisor immediately.
All the important points about the incident or illness must be recorded.
The minimum that should be recorded is:
- the name of the person affected
- the date, time and place of the incident
- the nature of the incident
Accidents and incidents can be recorded in an accident book.
Employers should record accidents and ill health where a worker is absent from work for more than three days.
The management of the organisation should then investigate the accident or incident to identify the root causes (not only what happened, but also why) and set up suitable controls to prevent such accidents or incidents happening again.
