Hazard: Alcohol and drugs
Alcohol and drugs (over-the-counter, prescription and/or illegal) can affect behaviour and judgement and reduce performance on jobs – such as driving or operating dangerous machinery – and, therefore, increase the risk of accidents and injury.
You must not work if you have taken alcohol or certain drugs.
Control: Alcohol and drugs
Alcohol should not be taken at work or shortly before work. The same applies to drugs, unless they are known not to affect performance. If you are prescribed a drug that might affect your performance at work, you must inform your supervisor.
Many employers have strict policies on alcohol and drugs. The policies may be supported by testing with worker consent. It is important to remember that levels of alcohol in the body may still be high the morning after drinking heavily the previous day.
Employers may encourage a person with an alcohol or drug use disorder to seek professional help. However, as a last resort, employers may have to take disciplinary action, possibly dismissing a worker to protect him/ her and others whose safety might be put at risk.
